Rising India

Water Sector

The biggest water market in the world - India accounts by far for the largest water market in the world. The overall water market is growing at 15-20 percent per annum. A total US$ 287 billion global water market into India is projected to expand and even if this target is reached within a decade, according to a report recently published by the Delhi office of the international NGO WaterAid,, "29% of the rural population, or 244 million people, and 23% of the urban population, or 90 million people, would still lack access to adequate safe, sustainable water".
Several factors have contributed to the growth in the water sector. These factors have created potentially large future requirements for drinking water and water purification. First, a growing population has increased the demand for drinking water and rapid urbanization has required increasing sewage and water treatment. Second, many industries have adopted water-recycling systems due to scarcity of water. Third, growing public concern, media pressure and renewed legislation have made industries install water treatment equipment. Companies offering services and products along the entire water value chain face great opportunities in India.
